This is actually a bond given to indemnify the recipient, secured by a mortgage lien. See the first link for this definition:
"Skadeløsbrev -- Et pantebrev, der giver sikkerhed for et bestemt løbende mellemværende, dog maksimeret til et bestemt beløb. Skadeløsbreve anvendes f.eks. i forbindelse med pensionisters sikkerhedsstillelse for 'indefrosne' ejendomsskatter over for kommunerne."
It's somewhat analogous to the mortgage loan agreement that a homebuyer signs. The loan agreement binds the lender to provide the funds for the purchase of the property, while the borrower/purchaser is bound to give a mortgage lien to the lender.
In the case of a skadeløsbrev, the person giving the indemnity bond agrees to secure the promised payment with a mortgage lien on some property. You might see it translated as just "indemnity bond" (as in Gyldendals Røde Ordbøger), but the "secured" aspect is essential here, IMO. That's how it's translated in the Norwegian "Norsk-engelsk juridisk ordbok" by Åge Lind. |
