Danish term or phrase: Erhvervsdrivende
I am translating "Erhvervsdrivende" as self-employed persons, and wanted to get some verification if that is reasonable, as "self-employed persons" would ordinarily be written as "Selvstændige erhvervsdrivende."

Trader
Explanation:
I'm unsure whether the term, as a noun, in fact connotes a sole or self-employed trader (AmE: proprietor).

OK. But businessman excludes a busy woman, plus trader is the term used in UK VAT legislation. IATE's website also has the Eurospeak entry of economic agent.

businessman

Explanation:
Alternatively: trader, tradesman or business owner.

However, I am not convinced 'erhvervsdrivende' necessarily implies 'self-employed'. In theory, you could be running a business for someone else.

www.ordnet.dk (Den Danske Ordbog) defines 'erhvervsdrivende' as 'som driver én eller flere virksomheder'.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks Tom! (but I am going to go with businessman, or entrepreneur, as 'trader' sounds too much like Davy Crocket.

Asker: I like "economic agent" (even if I have no idea of what that is).
