Danish term or phrase: forberedelse, hovedforhandling

These must be legal terms and I'm not a legal expert. What do the terms 'forberedelse' and 'hovedforhandling' mean in relation to a court case? Here's the sentence:

På mødet skal retten endvidere så vidt muligt fastlægge sagens videre forløb, herunder tidsrammerne for en eventuel yderligere forberedelse. Retten skal endvidere så vidt muligt fastsætte tidspunktet for hovedforhandlingen.

Asker: Thanks Christina...I found another source which suggested 'summary proceedings' for 'hovedforhandlinger' which sounded familiar, so I think to keep it in agreement, 'preliminary proceedings' sounds good for 'forberedelser'...good to get a few suggestions to get the grey matter going. :-)
