Danish term or phrase: håndværkssvende
This term is from a website concerning the migration of Swedish workers to i.a. Denmark in the late 19th century where the following sentence appears:

Svenske mænd var i det hele taget i vid udstrækning beskæftiget indenfor beklædningsrelateret produktion såsom skrædderi-, skomageri- og handskemageri. I 1882 var halvdelen af de svenskfødte ** håndværkssvende **og medhjælpere i København – 1.005 af 2.011 – aktive indenfor disse fag.

This is not a work you will meet much any more. I suppose this whole concept is archaic, since the mode of working and organising work has changed utterly since then.

Thanks Diarmuid - although I had already found the word you have suggested, I was in some doubt as to whether it was in fact correct. You have confirmed that it is the right word to use. :-)

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks Diarmuid - yes, I found the 'journeyman' translation in my (on-line) Gyldendals Red Dictionary too. I just have never encountered the word in English - is it perhaps archaic?
