The text deals with home renovation. I know what they are getting at in terms of 'staid interior decor' but perhaps there is a more vivid way of putting it?

(My husband and I love to poke fun at this sort of thing as we try to get our living room presentable for guests, removing the layer of magazines and crosswords and dusting the studio glass and batiks... one-off pieces, of course! Our relations ask: "Tror I, værdien holder?" every time we come home with some trophy, and we don't care a hoot, we just like it!) :-D

I heard a commercial on the radio the other day with a woman visiting somebody and saying: "Oh, it [home] is sooo retro!". It definitely had a negative meaning.
