Accounting / Public administration
Dutch term or phrase: ex-ante en ex-post
I am currently translating a document entitled: "Toetsingskader Misbruik en oneigenlijk gebruik bij ontvangsten." (The specific field is actually auditing, but it is not provided as an option in the pull-down menu)
Under the section on 'Evaluation' is the following text:
"Op welke wijze is het evaluatie-onderzoek opgezet?
Denk aan:
- spreiding over werkterrein/beleidsartikelen;
- spreiding over processen;
- periodiciteit;
- meerjarenplanning;
- ex-ante en ex-post."

Can someone either confirm that "ex-ante en ex-post" can be translated as 'the situation before and after', or alternatively provide another solution if mine is not correct.

All help is much appreciated.

Before(hand) and after / prospective and retrospective
Explanation:
E.g. Ex ante and ex post are terms which arise in statistics frequently. Statistics is about making decisions with incomplete information. Such decisions are "ex ante." They are made before complete information becomes available. Ex post analysis is retrospective. It looks back and asks what decision would have been optimal based on what actually came to pass.

Before / after the fact

E.g. Ex ante is a Latin term meaning "beforehand". "Ex ante" evaluations deal with forecasting and forecasted returns on invested money. Since some parameters are not known, they have to be estimated.

The opposite of ex ante is ex post, meaning "after the fact". In stochastic models, ex post calculations are those done with realized values.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks Adam for your 'wake-up call'. As you rightly indicate the terms ex ante and ex post are indeed used in English as well. My brand new enlarged Oxford Dictionary provided the definition I was looking for, namely: ex ante = based on forecast rather than on actual results, and ex post = based on actual rather than on forecast results.

agree  Ken Cox: de Keizer also gives 'future-oriented' or 'prior' for 'ex-ante' and 'actual' or 'historical' for 'ex-post'..
