Pigs can be farmed in free range, being allowed to wander around a village, kept in fields, or tethered in a simple house. In developed countries, farming has moved away from traditional pig farming and pigs are now typically intensively farmed. Today, hog operations are significantly larger than in the past, with most large-scale farms housing 5,000 or more pigs in *climate-controlled buildings*.
Morphological investigations of slaughterhouse material revealed a prevalence of 63% of the sows (n = 224) and 36% of the slaughter pigs (n = 209) with *mucosal lesions* in the pars oesophagea. The mucosal lesions were composed of severe hyperkeratosis, erosions or ulceration. Microscopic examination showed that hyperkeratosis is attended with parakeratosis. From experiments in a *climate controlled pighouse* it could be concluded that mixing of unfamiliar pigs resulted in higher prevalences of gastric lesions as compared with keeping the litter together until the end of the experiment (farrow to finish system).

Thank you Sue, it is exactly as you say. I posted it as an example as should be clear from my explanation for my answer and my response to Alexander. Alexander, why do you think you should ignore that?
Then I say we limit the discussion for now to 'sty' and I explain : as far as 'sty' or 'pighouse' is concerned in the context of a 'klimaatstal' and IF it is a 'klimaatstal voor varkens' then I think I would prefer 'pighouse', and I explained why.
And again, Alexander, you ignore my argument, I am only talking about the difference between a 'sty' and 'pighouse' - for now we limit the discussion ...

Can we leave 'pig' out of it now? Barend only put it in as an example because he felt something was needed to prefix 'house'. I think we've dealt with that issue. Maybe Barend should amend or repost his answer without the 'pig'.
One last point on 'stable' and cows: in the modern world (one with 'climate-controlled' animal housing), cows are not kept in stables any more but in 'houses', 'barns' or 'sheds'. Usage varies internationally but 'house' is the culturally neutral choice.

If it is about a 'klimaatstal voor varkens', I think would prefer 'pighouse' to 'sty'

A sty or pigsty is a small-scale outdoor enclosure for raising domestic pigs. It is sometimes referred to as a hog pen, hog parlor, pigpen, pig parlor, or pig-cote.
'stal' in NL does not necessarily equate to 'stable' in EN. As Barend says, it depends on the animal. A 'stable' in EN is a house for horses only and is best avoided unless the topic poster can confirm that horses are involved.
