Dutch term or phrase: tussenstuk
'X zal de tussenstukken racen' - this refers to a co-pilot driving the 'tussenstukken' in a road race, while the main driver does the main sections. Does anyone know the right term please?

Many thanks!

Although CART black-flagged us for speeding on pit lane, the data showed that we were not so we lost laps doing a drive through. At the end we were faster than the pole time in the *** intermediate section *** and were confident that we'd be on the front row, but we got our session cut short because of (Bruno) Junquiera's red flag."

course section

Explanation:
Maybe... Dit artikel verwijst naar pilot co-pilot change, the course, sections of the road. Dit is een lange race (300+ miles of zo). Een tussenstuk is meer van toepassing op een kortere race? A guess... Het is niet letterlijk een "tussen"stuk maar wel een stuk....

in-between sections

Explanation:
This is relatively informal, but it may work depending on the register and how the other sections are described (e.g driver X will drive sections A, B and C, while driver Y will drive the in-between sections)
