I can't decide if this should be a traffic warden or not.
These people just direct traffic in the case of road works and road closures.

traffic director

Explanation:
typically a traffic warden is a parking enforcer. Traffic director is a more acurate term.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Your input was a great help in steering me to the decison I finally made to use 'traffic steward'. I felt that director made the job too important it would be like calling someone a traffic officer which would suggest they were in the police force. Thanks again.

traffic controller

Explanation:
Google translates it as traffic controller and I se no reason to disagree. If this is UK English then traffic warden is definitely not the right translation.

agree  W Schouten: word of warning it can also be a traffic policeman depending on the context

disagree  Double Dutch: Thank you all for your input. We have decided to use the term 'traffic steward' as although it is a context sensitive term, so a policeman or woman could be a verkeersregelaar, this is not the most common situation. It is also not the case here.
