Pensioen wordt niet opgebouwd over het gehele pensioen gevende salaris. Op 65 jaar bestaat immers recht op een AOW-uitkering, hiermee wordt rekening gehouden door middel van een franchise. Pensioenregelingen kennen veelal een 70% resultaat inclusief deze AOW. Om dit pensioenresultaat te bereiken wordt in de opbouwperiode van het pensioen, de AOW ingebouwd. In de praktijk worden verschillende keuzes gemaakt, welk AOW-bedrag als uitgangspunt wordt genomen.
