Dutch to English translations [PRO] Bus/Financial - Business/Commerce (general) / social benefits | | Dutch term or phrase: economaat | This is apparently a specifically Belgian term, and it seems to have several meanings. Any idea which would be appropriate in this context?
The general context is a document describing the powers and duties of work councils (or of the works council in a particular organisation; that's not clear).
Under the heading 'Beheer van de maatschappelijke werken', there is the following:
De ondernemingsraad heeft tot tak al de maatschappelijke werken te beheren die door de onderneming worden ingesteld voor het welzijn van het personeel...
Concreet gaat het om de fondsen en kassen van onderlinge hulp, de pensioenfondsen, de economaten, kantines en refters, de diensten voor leningen en premies, toegestaan door de onderneming met het oog op het verwerven van een woongelegenheid, de onstpannings- en culturele activiteiten. |

Old boy Kinnock shows he's a poor shop steward
Neil Kinnock, the European commissioner for reform in the administration of Romano Prodi, was always a little sensitive to tales about the Economat, the Commission-run shop that was set up in the 1960s to provide poor Eurocrats with all those delicacies that they could not find in Belgium.

| Grading comment Thanks, that's what I thought (since the term occurs in the context of employee benefits in this case and appears to be in the same phrase as canteens and lunchrooms), but I wasn't sure. As it also has other meanings (as indicated by vangastel's answer and various google hits), I am including an alternate translation in the glossary. 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer |
