What is base stock system?
Think of a "base stock system" as a model where we replenish inventory one unit at a time as random demands occur, so that the only issue is to determine the reorder point, or the level of inventory at which point we order another unit. We place an order when there are x units in stock and expect to incur demand for y units while we wait for the replenishment order to arrive. Hence, x - y is the safety stock and the amount of inventory we expect to have on hand when the order arrives. The target inventory level we set for the system is known as a base stock level.

Base Stock (according to professor R.H. Parker\'s Dictionary of Accounting:
In the context of INVENTORY VALUATION (see asker\'s context), the calculation of the cost of inventories (stocks and work in progress) on the basis that a fixed unit value is ascribed to a predetermined number of units of stock, any excess over this number being valued by some other method. If the number of units is less than the predetermined minimum the fixed unit value is applied to the number in stock. The base stock method appears to be permitted by company law in the UK but it is not an acceptable method in standard accounting practice (SSAP 9).

BASE STOCK METHOD
In economics the base stock method is a method of accounting for stock movements that assumes a given amount of the stock never moves and therefore retains its original cost.

Base Stock Method
It is a method of inventory valuation in which a minimum amount of goods (the so-called base stock), carried at all times, is valued at its long-term normal price, while the goods carried in excess of this minimum are valued according to some other method, generally either cost or market, whichever is lower.

IJzeren voorraad

The usual method of stock valuation is at cost, or at a market value if less than cost. The alternative is \'base stock valuation,\' which holds that the profits made on an article cannot be assessed until the article bought to replace it has been sold. In practice this amounts to a writing down of stock in an accounting year.

The crux of the matter is that \"IJzeren voorraad\" is a METHOD OF VALUATION OF STOCK. That is not the case with \'safety stock\'. This is a very different term used in stock management, not in accounting. \"Base stock\' on the other hand is not only a method of valuing stock (see definition), it is the SAME as THE \"IJzeren voorraad\" method! |
