Ik denk dat ik er inderdaad maar een notitie bij doe. Ik moet alleen even goed opletten of ik geen onwaarheden vertel. Dus ik ga de tekst op die website nog eens goed doorlezen.

I too am an advocate of plain English, but all things considered, I think that Chris' suggestion of adding a note would cover it nicely. The aim of a good translation is to ensure that the reader understands the text, and let's face it, most people probably won't have a glue what 'short-type higher education' means.

Els, ik ben het helemaal met je eens. Diplomawaardering is een vak apart. Ik bedoelde alleen maar te zeggen dat die hele ingewikkelde titel alleen maar aangeeft dat de houder een gekwalificeerde vroedvrouw is. Maar zoals dat gaat in veel takken van sport: waarom iets in twee woorden zeggen als het ook in tien kan? ;-)

Tja. Als vertaler mag je een diploma niet 'waarderen'. Dus dan toch maar de optie van Kitty. Er staat gelukkig wel in het diploma, dat de titel van vroedvrouw wordt verleend!

Je zou altijd een noot kunnen toevoegen in de trant van "The holder is legally entitled to use the title 'Bachelor' under legislation passed in 2005". Hmmm, despite the possible anachronism, being an advocate of Plain English, I would definitely feel a strong temptation to render the entire title as "bachelor's degree in midwifery"... :-)

O, Chris, goed punt! De gelijkschakeling gaat pas in vanaf het jaar 2005. Dit is een diploma van 1995. Tja, dan moet ik het toch maar letterlijk vertalen. Wel lelijk, hoor!

Just wondering: would it be correct to translate this phrase as 'bachelor's degree' if the diploma in question pre-dates the bachelor-master system in Belgium, or pre-dates the legislation that equates this form of education with a bachelor's degree? (We don't know either way at the moment, but I'm assuming it does.) That would surely be an anachronism?

Belgian text? Then I think that this might refer to a (professional as opposed to academic) bachelor study programme/degree. It might be worth your while to check out the various sites on the higher education structure in Belgium.
