I recently consulted with an engineer in a major dredging company about this term. I was told to use (imprecisely dredged) "box-cut slope". Box cutting is a term which seems to be more common in opencast mining than in dredging. As a vertical cut is unstable in soft materials a box cut will slowly collapse to form a slope with a naturally formed gradient. A disadvantage is that material from the slope will spill out over the bottom of the structure to form a relatively unstable spill layer (morslaag). |
