Explanation:
Nog niet zo simpel als het lijkt, maar zijn dit zijn volgens mij twee mogelijkheden. 'Main engineer' is waarschijnlijk wat gebruikelijke in Brits Engels, en 'lead engineer' wat gebruikelijker aan de andere kant van de grote plas.

PS: 'Senior engineer', eventueel in combinatie met 'main engineer' of 'lead engineer' is wellicht ook een mogelijkheid.

"Constructeur" is not the same as "contractor" (aannemer), although it is quite normal for the design work to be carried out by the contractor's company or by a design firm engaged by the contractor.

neutral  André Linsen: I have to disagree with Saskia on this: it is indeed not unusual to have designers (architects) within big construction companies. These companies then can provide complete service: from concept to completely finished building!(even maintenance afterwards

The relation to the construction part only was (to me at least) not so clear-cut: building is more than just the conceptual, engineering or executing element. I may have payed more attention to your description than to the actual term.

Asker: The word "Hoofdconstructeur" in Dutch, as meant here, is more related to the Engineering part of the building project, not the contracting part. The given answers are more related to the contractor.

disagree  Textpertise: Having answered this question myself as main contractor, I checked Saskia's objections and found that indeed it needs to be structural engineer and not contractor. Just as main contractor is incorrect, so is principal contractor.
