For masters degrees and PhDs in the UK (and commonwealth countries) this exam is known as a "viva" (full term viva voce) and as "final examination" (or "defence") in the US where you "defend" your thesis to the exam board (at least one external & internal examiner). Vivas also take place for undergraduate degrees (in the UK), but this is commonly for degree classification purposes only.

I don't think there is an exact correspondence between the Dutch system and the UK or US system, but the afstudeerzitting is the meeting where a graduate candidate formally presents his or her graduate thesis to a board of examiners. Fortunately for translators, now that the Netherlands has formally switched to the batchelor/master system, it can also be called a masters thesis presentation.
AFAIK it's a less formal affair in the Netherlands than elsewhere (for one thing, other students, faculty members and even members of the public are welcome to attend - my daughter's boyfriend just did his presentation a few months ago, and my wife and I attended the presentation).

Defence of the Thesis
The Department's policy is to require the candidate to present and defend his or her thesis before it is submitted for examination. When the candidate and supervisor(s) agree that the thesis is nearing completion, the candidate asks the Graduate Studies Coordinator to convene and chair a defence of the thesis open to all staff and students of the University. The defence takes the form of a presentation by the candidate of the methods and results of the thesis (15-20 minutes approximately) to an audience that includes the principal supervisor and at least three other members of the permanent academic staff, followed by up to 40 minutes of the candidate answering questions on the thesis from the audience. A written précis of the candidate's presentation should be distributed to all academic staff members of the Department in advance.
