Dutch to English translations [PRO]
Education / Pedagogy / schools | | Dutch term or phrase: scholengroep | Can anyone help me with a good translation of 'scholengroep'?
Background: there is a tendency in the Netherlands at the moment for schools to merge. Although the individual school sites may retain their original identity, character, etc., once they belong to a 'scholengroep', they come under the centralised management of the groep. So you have, in effect, a number of schools whose only connection might be the fact that they are all managed by a single Board of Governors.
Is there a neat term for this concept in English? I find 'school group' a little unenlightening... |

This is one of those tricky problems we encounter from time to time, e.g. translation of a concept that has no real equivalent. My suggestion is to translate it just with school, e.g. the biggest local college in my area (here in the UK) recently merged with a number of smaller regional colleges and is now simply known under one - new - name. This college is indeed governed by one board of governors but has 4 or 5 smaller branches in surrounding towns. Internet searches on 'merged schools' show that these kind of schools are not referred to by a specific name such as 'scholengroep' but tend to change the actual name of the school only. |

| Grading comment I think you're right - it is in fact just a single school - esp. from a management and legal perspective, albeit one which arose from a merger of several schools. The result is a school located across several sites. Where relevant to the context, I have therefore qualified the term as 'multi-site school' ('multi-campus school' is also an option).
