If a 'lesperiode' is just a single lecture then the following sentence doesn't make sense.

Similarly, 'Studieloopbaanbegeleiding komt in elke lesperiode terug'
seems odd if lesperiode=lesson'.

I used to lecture in the States and I certainly didn't consider 'loopbaanbegeiding' in every lecture.

The reference below suggests that lesperiode can indeed refer to an entire semester.

Johan, just a further comment on 'six months'. I don't mean that a lesperiode lasts six months. There may be 15 (or whatever) weeks of actual instruction, plus a few breaks, exam week and the period taken to process exams. So by the time students know how they're going, they might have almost reached the halfway point of the academic year.

neutral  Francina: tuition=fee for instruction

-> Huh? Concise Oxford Dictionary: tuition = 1. teaching or instruction, esp. if paid; 2. a fee for doing this.

disagree  xxxzbenek: Tuition ..."teaching pupils individually (usually by a tutor hired privately)" www.dictionary.com // <-- Excuse me? One of the best dictionaries available!//Oxford entry: "teaching or instruction, especially of individuals or small groups" Strange...

-> Sorry, I don't agree. Consult a good dictionary or check the googles! // So is the Oxford.

neutral  Tina Vonhof: term would be ok but not with 'tuition' added (never mind the dictionary). Note added: Jack, you're right, it does appear in googles, but in all my years of university I've never heard or seen that term used - as Francina says, it usually refers to fees.

It seems a literal translation would suffice here, or simply lesson

neutral  Tina Vonhof: That would be after 1 hour - the source text says half a year.
3 hrs
-> I'm sorry, but period would define a period like 1 hour or even less, depending on the country, but lesson period can be a much longer time and it is quite commonly used by various education institutions, just google it!

disagree  Johan Venter: It seems to me that a lot of lesperiodes and most likely more than one subject make up a semester. In the sentence provided lesperiode does not refer to six months either.
33 mins
-> thanks for your comment Johan but please see the additional note in my entry

agree  Tina Vonhof: This would also work, as the end of the semester is the same as the end of a (half) course.
