Dutch to English translations [PRO] Social Sciences - Education / Pedagogy / bureaucratspeak | | Dutch term or phrase: horizon | I've come across this term in a text on learning standards in schools. Here's the sentence:
"De raad acht het gewenst aan de onderhavige regeling van de minimum leerresultaten een ***horizonbepaling*** toe te voegen en een tijdpad uit zetten voor het streven naar een wettelijke regeling van objectieve, absolute minimumstandaarden op enkele kernonderdelen van de leergebieden rekenen en taal."
I've seen the term used similarly elsewhere too, e.g. in a text on the length of the working week (going from memory now): 'De 38-urige werk dient als horizon voor het functioneren'.
Can you use 'horizon' in this sense in English? (I'm a tad doubtful, although open to persuasion :) If not, what is the right term? Could it be 'envelope', in the sense of a scope, or set of limitations?
All thoughts appreciated! |

| Grading comment The more I read it now, the more I think this it what it means: a date is set for the end of the old regime, and the path is cleared for a new arrangement. Certainly makes the most sense here. Many thanks! 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer |

Explanation: Hi Chris,
I take this to mean they are suggesting to set targets (something to aim for), but see how it fits in your text.
