Dutch to English translations [PRO]
Education / Pedagogy
Dutch term or phrase: propedeutische fase, postpropedeutische fase
These terms appear on our Dutch certificates and diplomas. For our English diplomas we need a translation for these terms to make a distinction between the subjects taught in the first year of the programme and in the main phase. Is it right to simply say propedeutic phase and postpropedeutic phase?
Hannelore Wagemakers
propaedeutic phase, post-propaedeutic phase
Explanation:
Nederlandse Hoger Onderwijs Termen in het Engels, Nuffic, Den Haag, 1994: propadeuse diploma = propaedeutic certficate. "Persons wishing to enrol for the *post-propaedeutic* part of a study programme must have a certificate showing that they have passed the propaedeutic examination for that programme or a related programme."

  -> Thanks, Barend!

neutral  Chris Hopley: Nuffic: "Do not use the term 'foundation year' because this is used in many countries for a preparatory year, whereas in the Netherlands the propedeuse is part of the degree programme." http://nufficglossary.nuffic.nl/ // See previous Kudoz entries.

  -> I did the foundation year at the Open University and this was the first year of a Maths degree. After the foundation year, I did another 2 years to complete the BA. The foundation year did count towards the degree.

// Yes, context, target audience, etc. :-) Anyway, thank you.

agree  Sindy Cremer

  -> Thanks, Sindy.

agree  Tina Vonhof: I always use this term, even though it is not well-known here. Foundation phase has a different meaning, and is more likely used in relation to elementary education.

  -> Thanks, Tina. This would seem to support the warning the Nuffic glossary gives about using the term 'foundation phase'.
