It could be that stercirculatie differs from standard circulation by having specific addresses where the publications go to, i.e. not chance lending as is the case with the normal library cycle.

This is pure speculation though and perhaps the Asker would be better off confirming this with the client.

I am just wondering whether someone at some point has translated STAR circulation as stercirculatie (see reference information) - not having known about STAR. I cannot really understand from what I have researched in what way stercirculatie differs from conventional circulation of books and periodicals - i.e. conventional issue to the user and return to the library, other than as a way of distinguishing it from lijncirculatie where it is handed on from one user to the next without returning to the hub.

Many of these terms seem to be based on shapes, so there seems to be a method to the madness. I think your best bet would be to use these same terms in English (i.e. literal translation), as I am sure that your client did not pluck the terms from thin air.

The problem here is that there are several terms besides ster en lijncirculatie I think are also inherent to the Netherlands only, e.g. ringcirculatie and mengcirculatie. I'm not sure the appropriate translation exists for any of these terms.

U kunt tijdschriften op twee verschillende manieren laten circuleren:
1. Lijncirculatie: de lezers geven het tijdschrift aan elkaar door
2. Stercirculatie: elke lezer geeft het tijdschrift terug aan de biblio-theek, waar het wordt doorge¬stuurd naar de volgende lezer.

Isn't there another reference in the document to this term, or perhaps a paragraph before or after this part that would provide more insight into the term?

It does not seem to be a standard term at any rate and may require either a literal translation (if that would make sense in context of the entire document), or an inventive option.
