I can't find 'sloegebied' in GVD. Plenty of hits on Google, but I can't find a definition. Anyone come across this before? |

Winkler Prins Encyclopedie (9e editie):
"Sloe -- arm van de Westerschelde, in de Nederlandse prov. Zeeland, vormt een inham in de zuidkust van het overgangsgebied tussen Walcheren en Zuid-Beveland. Aanvankelijk stond het Sloe naar het noorden toe in verbinding met het Veerse Gat. De afsluiting vond plaats in 1871 door de aanleg van een dam ten behoeve van de spoorlijn Middelburg-Goes. Aan de zuidzijde van de dam is in 1949 de Quarlespolder bedijkt. Het door indijking ontstane Sloegebied (1962 vv.; 2300 ha) biedt ruimte aan chemische, petrochemische en metallurgische industrie; voorts bevindt zich er de kerncentrale van Borssele en een containerhaven (1971). De haven is toegankelijk voor schepen tot 50 000 ton".

| Grading comment Closing this early as I think I've had all the necessary mileage out of it. Thanks to all for your help and especially to Jack for the pertinent references. I didn't realise that the Sloe was a geographical feature, just took 'Sloegebied' to be yet another neologism. If I'd fished once in a different section of the Schelde, I might have known ;-)
