I found google refs and think I have understood what this means - systems that are constantly 'fired' or 'heated' up to a high heat output - can anyone help with some (UK) terminology for this?

"These guard columns also extend the life of the GC column. In addition the liquid phase coated column is not inserted into the hot GC injection port where decomposition of the liquid phase could easily occur if the injection port is maintained at constant high temperatures."

agree  Jack den Haan: 'Fired' and even 'heated', as LAB2005 suggests, would be quite OK too, IMO.

  -> Thanks Jack - I wanted to avoid "fired" with its associations to kilns, but I agree "heated" would also work
