neutral  Olly Pekelharing: I googled 'sluis' and 'op een kier' and its a fairly common combination. Not so 'sluice' and 'ajar', if you ignore the references to Dutch sources.

  -> yes, a bit artificial you mean?// the source does something unconventional as well, comparing opening a sluice with opening a door. I felt like keeping the door metaphore.

neutral  Olly Pekelharing: Your reference was written by Dutchmen... ... I did that, it is not so much 'put ajar' (although it sounds unidiomatic, and no hits that I can find point to a reliable source), as that I don't like using 'ajar' for a sluice gate.

  -> Sorry but this is a bad counter-argument, "put ajar" seems to be a rather common expression, just search on the internet. Not all Dutchmen write poor English.

For all purpose and intent, I think a self-regulating sluice will do.

Er is nóg een factor die het karwei bij de spuisluis tot
een uitdaging maakt. Als gevolg van een besluit van
ex-staatssecretaris Monique de Vries van Verkeer en
Waterstaat, gaan de sluizen bij het Haringvliet in
2005 voor 95 procent van de tijd op een ‘kier’. Dit om
de visintrek, met name van zalm, te bevorderen. Nu
wordt alleen zoet water gespuid op zee, straks zal ook
zeewater weer worden ingelaten. Doel hiervan is om
het oude getij van vóór de sluiting van de dam terug
te brengen, waardoor de ‘oude’ ecologische systemen
weer een kans krijgen."

Dit betekent dat de spuisluizen een heel andere
functie krijgen. Nu heeft die in feite de functie van
dam, straks die van stormvloedkering. Met deze
andere functie komen heel andere veiligheidseisen in
beeld. Sol: “De nieuwe installaties moeten aan de
vigerende wettelijke eisen voldoen. De spuisluizen
staan in de nieuwe situatie ook bij vloed open. Bij
deze vorm van beheer worden de schuiven ook
zwaarder, anders mechanisch belast. Bij zware storm
moeten ze dicht en dan mogen de elektrotechnische
systemen niet falen.” Om – ook in de toekomst –
aantoonbaar aan de veiligheidseisen te voldoen,
worden moderne probabilistische ontwerpmethodieken
toegepast. “Daarin rekenen we met de faalkans van
de componenten van de installaties en de
bijbehorende reparatietijd”, zegt Sol.

The characteristics of the Self-Regulating Tide Gates are: Tide gates shall be of Nekton design; Shall allow tidal flushing of the salt march or slough during normal tidal cycles, while providing flood protection for upland areas. neutral  Olly Pekelharing: Nice bit of research, but you're diverging rather a bit too much from the source text! The question is not what kind of sluice it is, but how to describe it being in a partially open state!

  -> zie mijn aanvullende noot hierboven - het gaat om de functie/werking van de sluis. Het "op een kier zetten" moet niet letterlijk genomen worden.
