Dutch term or phrase: wateringen

"controle en ondersteuning werking polders en wateringen"

From a list of tasks of the Flemish Environment Agency.

My first impulse is "drainage basins".
Any suggestions?
Can anyone confirm with references?

drainage ditches

Explanation:
these are the big ditches you see in northwest France and SW Flanders I believe

Van Dale gives hoofdsloot - main drainage ditch - for watering.

wateringen - or in French Flemish "wateringues" - is also used for the whole organisation of drainage systems. That would not exclude drainage basins or dikes or anything else involved in draining the land.

In the Netherlands one talls of 'waterschappen' (District Water Boards), in Belgium 'polders' or 'wateringen'.

Een polder of watering is een openbaar bestuur in Vlaanderen met als opdracht haar ambtsgebied te beveiligen tegen wateroverlast en een gunstige waterhuishouding tot stand te brengen voor de landbouw en de algemene volksgezondheid. Naast de landbouw zijn ook natuurbehoud, visserij, toerisme, drinkwatervoorziening enz... belangrijke onderdelen van het beleid van polders en wateringen; polders en wateringen zijn bijgevolg belangrijke actoren in het Integraal Waterbeheer.
