Dutch term or phrase: microbiologische betrouwbaarheid
De benadering van de *microbiologische betrouwbaarheid* is ook veranderd. Vroeger keken we vooral naar fecale besmetting, naar de aanwezigheid van E-coli. Nu kijken we naar de pathogenen zelf.

I don't really see the need for having this translated into Pig Latin as well, but you never know what people are into these days...

There are of course many hits on the Internet for "biological safety", 81,900 on Google, to be precise.

As an additional reference, Eurodic translates the German term "mikrobiologische Sicherheit" given above as follows:

My apologies for being a pest with this, but I have one more reference that needs to be added and I'm not quite sure why I didn't check that first.

Eurodic also contains the term in the Dutch to English pair, so I don't know why I went to check the German English pair before checking this one:

Subject Public Administration - Private Administration - Offices (AD)
Medicine (ME)

TERM microbiologische betrouwbaarheid

neutral  writeaway: linguistically makes sense-but too few refs on Google to make it feasible and Johan's research is fairly convincing, imho. The NL has zigged where the other languages zagged./did see that.fwiw-if it's a back-translation this answer is perfect! ;-)

Notes to answerer
Asker: I actually had all three answers that are given here as a possible translation and was second guessing myself. Thanks for going through the trouble of convincing me this one is right.

agree  writeaway: does seem to be the term-seems that someone didn't do a great job at coining the NL equivalent-all other languages use the word safety.the NL seems to have gone its own way on this one.To the extent that a native NL Asker couldn't find the way back!

-> I suppose the same way in which they adopt some English words and then twist the meaning around a bit to give those of us on the other side of the fence a bit of a headache :) Thanks.

agree  DutchConnection: Two terms are often interchangeable - my trusty digital Van Dale has fail-safe for betrouwbaar, and take e.g. child car seats (safe) and contraceptives (safe or reliable): betrouwbaar/safe/reliable.>'The art...' - that's what makes KudoZ forum so lively!
