Dutch term or phrase: steekmonster
Deze term komt voor in een rapport i.v.m. een onderzoek naar de kwaliteit van een bepaald strand en specifiek naar de aanwezigheid van zeegras en slibvorming aan dat strand. Voor het onderzoek zijn er watermonsters ("water samples") en **steekmonsters** genomen. Ik kan geen goed Engels equivalent voor die steekmonsters vinden. Heeft iemand een tip? Thankx.

Explanation:
Uit de context blijkt dat het om sediment gaat (strand in wetenschappelijke termen), en er zijn allerlei speciale apparaten om verschillende soorten samples, bv ook onder water, te nemen. In dit geval is een schop, of een "steekbuis" (voor strand/zand/sediment) voor de hand liggend (sample tube, voor gestandaardiseerde samples). Maar afgezien van de methode, sediment sample zou moeten volstaan.

Dit lijkt mij in de gegeven context inderdaad de best passende oplossing, aangezien het inderdaad om slibmonsters moet gaan (in tegenstelling tot de ook genomen watermonsters). Het element "steek" uit de Nederlandse term gaat weliswaar verloren, maar het zal wel duidelijk zijn dat slibmonsters worden genomen door een stekende beweging (met een schop of steekbuis) te maken. Bedankt!

Asker: Als ik "random sample" gebruik, komt het contrast tussen "watermonsters" en "steekmonsters" niet tot zijn recht. Watermonsters zijn (natuurlijk) monsters van het water en steekmonsters moeten dan wel monsters van het zand en/of het slib zijn. Als ik schrijf: "Water samples and random samples were taken", weet de Engelstalige lezer niet wat ik bedoel.

(spade) spit sample


Explanation:
A spit sample is a layer of earth whose depth is equal to the length of the blade of a spade (Oxford Dictionary of English)

I guess that if 'watermonsters' are samples of the water at that beach then 'steekmonsters' must be samples of the sand on that beach.

Walk ten paces in any direction, stop and take another spade spit sample. Repeat this until you have taken ten samples. Work out the average number of grass grubs per spade spit.
