"LArLt is de afkorting voor de term 'langtijdgemiddelde beoordelingsniveau'. Dit is het gemiddelde van de afwisselende niveaus van het ter plaatse in de loop van een bepaalde periode optredende geluid. Hierbij wordt tevens rekening gehouden met de afzonderlijke geluidsbijdragen tijdens de verschillende bedrijfstoestanden van de inrichting. Ook het karakter van het geluid (impulsachtig, tonaal, muziek) en variaties van het immissieniveau als gevolg van verschillende weersomstandigheden (meteocorrectie) worden meegewogen. Het LArLt wordt vastgesteld overeenkomstig de "Handleiding meten en rekenen industrielawaai, 1999."
