Contracts for large projects, e.g. oil pumping installations or the manufacture of fighter planes or even lift installations in high-rise office buildings require there to be a detailed commissioning and handover specification or plan which literally lists every item to be ticked. All the detail is in that - doesn't matter what "that" is. Surprised you have never come across this type of document, Chris.

In this case you might be right, Textpertise, but it would still be very useful to know. How can we be expected to help provide a translation for a word when the meaning is all but uncertain???????

Commissioning means making sure whatever you are supplying is working properly. Handover means making sure that whoever has purchased the equipment or construction has all the plans, all the operating and troubleshooting instructions, and basically all the information needed to carry on using it. The responsibility for insurance, operation, liability etc. passes at the time of handover from the contractor to the purchaser. It doesn't matter what quantity or complexity of equipment is being supplied. The concept is the same.
