When council houses are sold off to tenants in the UK they have an 'option to buy'; this is offered for a limited period after which either, nothing happens (the tenants stay put) or someone else can buy the property.

neutral  writeaway: ref? in English, one can acquire something without buying it. In Dutch, kopen it to purchase/buy.

  -> yes writeaway... you may be right... in that case I would use "Purchase Right" (instead of "option") as "recht" is a legal term here...
