De financiering van het salaris van de curator wordt thans in belangrijke mate bepaald door de zogenaamde boedelbijdrage van de separatist. In de praktijk wordt meestal in overleg met de curator bepaald hoe de rechten van de separatist worden afgewikkeld. Onroerende en roerende zaken worden veelal in samenwerking met de curator onderhands verkocht en ook over de inning van verpande vorderingen worden vaak afspraken met de curator gemaakt. De separatist betaalt de curator een boedelvergoeding voor zijn inspanningen, veelal conform de in de Separatistenregeling5 opgenomen percentages en bedragen. Bij deze wijze van afwikkeling hebben zowel de separatist als
de boedel belang. De separatist en de curator hebben voor deze wijze van afwikkeling elkaars medewerking nodig. Gevolg van een en ander is, dat er een machtsevenwicht tussen de curator en separatist bestaat waardoor de bank en de curator het vrijwel altijd eens worden over een onderhandse verkoop en de curator een boedelbijdrage ontvangt ter dekking van de kosten.

Het heeft de voorkeur van de NVB dat de hoogte van de boedelbijdrage als voorheen onderdeel blijft uitmaken van de onderhandelingen tussen de betrokken partijen, met inachtneming van de Separatistenregeling. Op deze wijze blijft maximale flexibiliteit bestaan.
