Dutch term or phrase: kandidaat-overnemer
Het gaat hier over aandelen. Wanneer een aandeelhouder zijn aandelen wil overdragen, moet hij een brief sturen naar de raad van bestuur met de naam van de kandidaat-overnemer aan wie hij/zij de aandelen wenst over te dragen.

Thanks. It was extremely hard to choose between this and Jarry's applicant but this one had the most support. I also found the term 'applicant transferee' on the Net.

applicant

Explanation:
If it is clear from the context, I would use this. If not, you may have to use something horrible like the 'potential acquirer' (of the shares)

takeover candidate

Explanation:
Applicant does not quite sound the same to me in this case and I would rather use "takeover candidate". This is both a more litteral translation as well as a more appropriate term, based on the given description.

neutral  xxxjarry: A takeover candidate is a term used in acquisitions & mergers http://www.leggmason.com/tools/dictionary/TermDefinition.asp... I said in my suggested answer that I would use 'applicant' if it was clear from the context (the preceding text that is)

-> True, but then simply adding the word "shares" in front of "takeover candidate" would make it clear what was meant. Applicant is too general and it would perhaps not describe the actual position of the person as well as the original Dutch term.
