Mary, I did a search and some of the alternatives I found for chagrin are: embarassment, shame, awkwardness, self-consciousness and mortification. I don\'t think that fits with your context.

Tina, I did use chagrin in the end (embarrassment and shame etc. are not primary meanings of the word), but it was your response that brought me closest.

Explanation:
Hi Mary,
I went back to the source, the Dikke Van Dale, and to my surprise I found that 'iets met lede ogen aanzien' can mean 'met spijt of afgunst'. I agree with Tina that 'envy' is a valid option here, but depending on the tone of your source text it could very well mean 'jealousy' or a derivative thereof.
