Explanation: De hele zin zou naar mijn mening anders moeten; bijv. kun je van een uitnodiging spreken in deze context? En "stijlformule"is ook al zoiets waar je niet mee kunt.............. (en als de schrijver een "stijlfiguur" bedoelt, waarom zegt hij/zij dan niet gewoon om welke het gaat ? )

A stijlfiguur is a figure of speech. Could this have something to do with figures of speech or rhetorical devices? (I looked up stijlfiguur in the big Nl-Nl Van Dale and it seems to lead in that direction. (and so does Somerset\'s explanation).

Explanation: Judging from the only google hit for 'Finger Zuid', which relates to Zaventem Airport, the text is most likely Belgian, and so it shouldn't be surprising that the author uses 'stijlformule', which sounds very much like a literal translation of the French 'formule du style'.
I leave it up to Prozians with a better understanding of French to suggest an appropriate translation.
However, you could probably use 'figure of speech' (stijlfiguur). The other possiblities that occur to me are 'rhetorical expression' or 'something said only for the sake of form'. In any case, it seems clear that the first author is suggesting that the 'uitnodiging' was not to be understood literally and/or taken seriously, and the second author is denying this suggestion.
