neutral  Olly Pekelharing: Where I come from (NZ), this phrase is often used quite flippantly ('Nip it in the bud, mate'), whereas this context is utterly serious. But this may not be the experience of Uk or other English speakers.

Anne Frank is wereldberoemd. Miljoenen mensen over de hele wereld hebben haar dagboek gelezen. De Anne Frank Stichting promoot Anne Frank en haar gedachtengoed. De reizende tentoonstelling 'Anne Frank - een geschiedenis voor vandaag' is de meest bezochte Nederlandse expositie in het buitenland. Het Achterhuis bezocht ik voor het eerst in 2001. Het Achterhuis maakt op veel mensen een diepe indruk. Ook op mij. Ik voelde de spanningen van de onderduikers. Ik besefte dat Anne in het web van de nazi’s verstrikt was geraakt. Zij was uit haar leefomgeving gerukt. Haar leven werd in de knop gebroken. Anne was geïnteresseerd in cultuur, religie en wetenschap en had een grote maatschappelijke belangstelling en was begaan met ieders wel en wee. Daarom vind ik het erg wrang dat zij vermoord is. Om één reden: zij was een jodin. Bij mij ontstond de behoefte om het leven van Anne Frank in beeld te brengen. Niet door middel van een biografie of een boek met oude foto’s, waarvan er al zoveel zijn verschenen.
