Dutch term or phrase: in het leven op de apenrots
Phrase appears in a newspaper article (interview with a marketing manager), in the following sentence:

'Hij is iemand die gepokt en gemazeld is in het leven op de apenrots.'

Translation: 'He is someone who has been tried and tested ...'

Would anyone be able to give me a suggestion for 'in het leven op de apenrots'? I cannot find a reference to it.
Is it a metaphor playing with living in a crowded area?

Many thanks in advance!

Explanation:
rather a cliche (as is 'het leven op de apenrots'), but it retains the metaphor

Thanks to everyone for all their help. I decided to go for Kenneth's option, which nicely keeps a bit of the 'jungle' feeling. Thanks Kenneth!

Dieren- & managementmetaforen
