Dutch to English translations [PRO] Social Sciences - Government / Politics | | Dutch term or phrase: Afstemming | Good old afstemmen. I know there's already an entry for 'afstemmen' in the glossary, but somehow I don't feel it quite fits the bill in this sentence:
- Harmonisatie: afstemming van activiteiten met andere donoren in een ontwikkelingsland.
'coordinating with other donors' doesn't imply the actual matching of activities.
'matching activities' doesn't necessarily mean coordinating with other donors.
'coordinating with other donors in order to match activities' I feel is adding a bit too much of my own interpretation.
Anybody have a quick fix? |

| | information exchange, liaison | Explanation: Afstemming in this context might not be as far-reaching as coordination or matching of activities, but merely an information exchange so that each donor knows what the other donors are doing (potentially helping to avoid duplication and/or treading on toes).
E.g. 'Harmonisation: liaison with other donor organisations on their activities in a developing country. |

Explanation: Without more context, this is fine; only context would allow for a more nuanced choice.

Depending on context, you might also say:
Coordinating activities in a developing country with other donors.

I really don't see any difference in nuance between "afstemmen" and "bring in tune with" - but that may be a matter of the complex of individual experiences embedded in words...? (e.g. read: Experience and the creation of meaning, by Eugene Gendlin).

Correction: Experiencing and the Creation of Meaning.

Asker: Sounds good, but to bring in tune with still doesn't imply actual contact, overleg, with other donors... Afstemming does, I think. I'm trying to catch that in a phrase.
