Dutch to English translations [PRO] History | | Dutch term or phrase: Vrije Baronie | Dit dorp heeft als Hoge Heerlijkheid of Vrije Baronie een rijke en bewogen geschiedenis gekend.
It seems to me that towns used to enjoy 'class status' in the past, with Hoge Heerlijkheid being higher than Vrije Baronie. Unfortunately I'm not Dutch, so I'm not that familiar with the history. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

The lands of Merchiston were raised to a free barony in 1512 in his favour. Sir Alexander also fought at Flodden, but unfortunately, he did not survive.

In the British peerage system, barons rank after viscounts. A female of baronial rank has the honorific baroness. A baron may hold a barony (plural baronies).
William the Conqueror introduced "baron" as a rank into England to distinguish the men who had pledged their loyalty to him (see Feudalism). Previously
