Dutch to English translations [PRO]
Bus/Financial - Human Resources
Dutch term or phrase: gevraagd of ongevraagd
General context: NL company regulations document regarding internal confidential contact persons (vertrouwenspersonen).

Specific context: in a bullet list of what the person does (first item under 'definitie vertrouwenspersoon'):

'adviseert de directie gevraagd of ongevraagd op verzoek op het gebied van preventie en bestrijding van ongewenste omgangsvormen.'

My take is that either 'gevraagd of ongevraagd' is such a cliche that people use it without thinking about the literal meaning, or there's something wrong with the construction of the phrase.

Explanation:
'gevraagd of ongevraagd', maar tegelijkertijd 'op verzoek'?
Zou dit inderdaad weglaten en klant (desgevallend) verwittigen.

Thanks. FWIW, I asked the client via the agency and received a nice explanation of the meaning of 'gevraagd' and 'ongevraagd', with the comment that 'de vraag niet geheel duidelijk is'. So I put this down to idiom or selective blindness. Harry has a valid point, but I don't think that's what's intended here.

disagree  Harry Borsje: uitgaande van een bewuste woordkeuze, is een mogelijke interpretatie: gevraagd (door de directie) of ongevraagd (door de directie) [maar alleen?] op verzoek (van de persoon, die te rade gaat bij de vertrouwenspersoon)

-> is allicht een mogelijkheid, maar erg onduidelijk verwoord in brontekst - zou hier niet gokken en klant om verduidelijking vragen; in elk geval moet dan aangegeven worden van wie het verzoek komt

agree  MoiraB: yes, one of those cases where omitting it doesn't change the meaning and even makes the text sound less awkward. BTW vertrouwenspersoon is usually confidential advisor. Alternatively, include specific area in title (eg Sexual Harassment Advisor)

agree  Chris Hopley: the addition of 'op verzoek' reveals just how semantically dilute this phrase really is

agree  writeaway: op verzoek and gevraagd seem to be the same-agree that client should be asked.

agree  Dave Calderhead: agree - and vertrouwenspersoon can also be counsellor, fiduciary or confidant
