leave their self-esteem intact, don't belittle their efforts etc. that's the gist imo. Since only you can see the actual doc and the translation has to fit in with the style and register you're using, I'll leave the wording up to you. ;-)
It means they should respect the person taking the course, for example, even when that person continuously makes huge mistakes, encourage him to keep trying, don't speak of him/to him in a low way. Hope this helps :-)
