Before the installation of PP and Payrite, BPL had been using a UNIX-based system to manage its HR and payroll records. The system was used in a limited fashion and was difficult to administer. The system did not meet BPL’s needs and it was often found much easier to undertake administrative tasks manually rather than use the system.
Certain tasks such as annual pay reviews tended to be quite complex undertakings, especially given the complications of BPL’s SALARY GRADING SYSTEM. Preparing anything but the most basic reports was very time consuming.

2. What is a Staff Salary Grading System?
(i) Characteristics
A salary grading system consists of a series of bands or grades which are related to a salary range with identified minimum and maximum pay. Jobs are placed into these grades according to criteria decided by the company. For example, a grade can be related to qualifications, or to experience. Every job in a grade is said to be fundamentally equal, that is, they all feature the same basic characteristics. Variations in salary within a band can relate to length of service, training and experience. Salary systems can vary in structure depending on their purpose within the company.
