Notes to answerer
Asker: How would you structure the sentence then? "...must have redundance built in" (used as a noun) does not sound correct to me, which is why I askd the question.

agree  Harry Borsje: also with suggested structure options//Erik heeft natuurlijk gelijk (al bestaat redundance wel), in deze context moet het redundancy zijn (of redundant)

-> Thanks Harry // Redundanc'y' is much better here but the other structure exists likewise though not very common.

disagree  Erik Boers: I don't think this word exists in English.

-> You can say either, but redundanc'y' is more common, I have to agree, I meant to write 'redundancy' but somehow the e crept in instead of the y. Mea culpa but see e.g. www.freepatentsonline.com/5294791.html

agree  Dave Calderhead: OED b Engin., Computing, etc. The incorporation of extra components or processes to permit continued functioning in the event of a failure.
