Dutch term or phrase: Chinese koppeling
Lokale besturen zijn al geruime tijd bezig met het denken rond midware. Dat is software die alle verschillende softwaresystemen met elkaar doet praten. De voordelen zijn bijzonder groot in termen van efficiëntie: gedeelde data zorgt ervoor dat dubbels vermeden worden, dat telkens juiste data wordt gebruikt.

Maar dergelijke projecten zijn ook duur en tijdrovend. Vandaar dat je soms in je organisatie niet bang hoeft te zijn om de Chinese koppeling te gebruiken. Dat is manueel kopieren en plakken van gegevens. Niet elegant, een klein beetje tijdrovend, maar het is iéts. Je mag de latere komst van een midware project niet als een excuus zien om data nu al te gaan delen tussen diensten. Ook al is het via een Chinese koppeling.

Zoals ik dit lees is dit zoiets als een "ethnic joke", en in deze tijd van "political correctness" lijkt het me beter om dit aspect te verwijderen.

Reference information:
It's not a common term and has (as far as I can gather) started as a joke.

It's actually any manually performed, repetitive step, also e.g. printing a document to subsequently manually enter the data in a program.
It refers to (cheap) Chinese manual labour, where a large number of people will do very repetitive work on a daily basis because in the end it would be cheaper to hire them than to automate the process.
