Note the Defendant can join in a third party (TP) by service of a TP notice OR a Plaintiff/Claimant can add another Co-Defendant to an existing Defendant.
Often non-English lingos make no distinction, but it is a trick Eng./Can. etc. civil litigation exam question and is not canvassed very well in any dictionaries or KudoZ etc. glossaries.

It could be that you will have to pay for everything (and then have a claim against your ex to pay half - if it goes to court with a creditor, then you can issue third party proceedings against your ex)

Sorry, it should read "against your ex to pay you half" (forgot the "you" in my original answer).
