| | the prior art | Explanation: Dit is de standaardterm in octrooidocumenten. Prior art wordt ook wel vertaald met 'stand der techniek', maar 'bekende techniek' komt ook veel voor, vooral bij een van de grootste telecombedrijven (en meest actieve octrooiaanvragers!)in Nederland.

| Grading comment As this is what I used, it gets the points, but I'm also putting some of the other answers in the glossary.
