Dutch to English translations [PRO]
Bus/Financial - Law: Taxation & Customs
Dutch term or phrase: door ons afgezien van
Full context: "Gelet op het eerder genoemde geringe fiscaal belang wordt in dit specifieke geval door ons afgezien van correctie van de te weinig afgedragen douane rechten bij invoer." I don't understand where the door ons afgezien van fits in. Are they saying that they have decided the shortfall in import duty doesn't have to be paid in this specific case or that the minor fiscal importance doesn't relate to the shortfall in import duty and that that has to be paid? HELP!!! Urgent!

we have decided to renounce/relinquish/refrain from collection ...
Explanation:
The structure is 'wordt door ons afgezien van...', which is one of these favourite passive constructions the Dutch officials like to use so much, and the sort of thing that gets confusing when you can't take the time to sit back and sort it out in your mind.

Should of course be 'correction' as Olly has pointed out.

agree  Chris Hopley: In plainspeak it would be something like: "You haven't paid enough in customs duties, but the shortfall is not worth our trouble collecting" :-)
