Dutch to English translations [PRO]
Bus/Financial - Law: Taxation & Customs
Dutch term or phrase: houderschapsbelasting
One of a list of components of a leasing contract for a company car.

I know what they mean but I cannot find a translation that satisfies me. Any ideas?

English translation:(vehicle) holder's tax
Explanation:
This is the term used on the official Internet site of the Taxation Department in the Netherlands.

http://www.belastingdienst.nl/organisatie/en/tax/tax-04.html
On hearing or seeing the words 'tax return', many taxpayers tend to think of income tax. But the Tax and Customs Administration issues many more types of tax return, such as returns for:
* wage tax
* VAT
* corporation tax
* vehicle holder's tax (formerly motor vehicle tax)

@writeaway: It is indeed confusing, and you are quite right about the lessor holding the 'kenteken'. According to the reference below, as lessee I am apparently not legally obliged to pay 'houderschapsbelasting' at all. It's just a matter of the lease company stipulating that I have to refund it to them ;-)

Thanks to all for the "extensive" discission and suggestions. The answer was hidden in Jack's answer. I think it is simply a "motor vehicle registration tax", more often referred to as a "vehicle registration tax".

holdership tax / ownership tax

Explanation:
The Juri-Lex calls it "holdership tax' I am sure that is perfectly correct. It just sounds odd to me. I have called it 'ownership tax' in the past, but perhaps that sounds too US English.

I hope that this helps somewhat.

Cheers from a very gloomy and rainy Suriname.

agree  writeaway: Personally I find it a bit confusing-since Lessee holds the vehicle but Lessor holds the kenteken. But if that's the official terminology, no point in fighting city hall..... :-)

Note to reference poster
Asker: Hi, you should enter what you think is the right term. Your references are very good and explain well. The "houderschapsbelasting" is evidently an older term.

neutral  Jack den Haan: @Asker: 'houderschapsbelasting' is not an older term. It's the term that is currently used. The older term is 'motorrijtuigenbelasting'.
