Part of the Belgian Finance/Customs department, I am not sure if the meaning is 'investigation service' or 'investigation inspectorate', or if I am barking up the wrong tree ...please help

That is the translation I have for "Steuerfahndung". Your context gives it away a bit, in Dutch this should actually be "fiscale opsporingsdienst " = Steuerfahndung.

That is the translation I have for "Steuerfahndung". Your context gives it away a bit, in Dutch this should actually be "fiscale opsporingsdienst " = Steuerfahndung.

neutral  Kirsten Bodart: In Belgium there is no such thing as a central 'tax inspectorate'. All ministries do, however, have their own 'anti-fraud unit'. This opsporingsinspectie does nothing else but track down drugs and such./ And TI has only 160,000 results on Google.

Explanation:
The 'opsporingsdienst' deals with people who do not pay, or are suspected of not paying, their taxes or other duty (bringing things into the country) so are committing fraud. They also deal with VAT carousels for example.

Can't find the name of it in HM Customs and Excise, but actualy as it is not the equivalent, it shouldn't be called that.

So, according to this document: http://www.ccrek.be/docs/Reports/2006/2006_07_NatOpsporing.p... (Rekenhof), all 'opsporingsdirecties' or divided into 'inspecties' and the latter into 'secties' (don't ask...). Customs officers operate within those 'secties'. Some in the inspectie have police competencies (bevoegdheden) that enable them to do certain things others are not allowed to do. Douane en Accijnzen officers have more jurisdiction than any other 'inspectie' in any other department. All 'opsporingsinspecties' are part of the Ministry of Finance (naturally), but clearly if any PV was made in customs and excise, and the case referred to the 'inspectie' superior to the 'sectie' where the officer operates really, then clearly the case was one of evasion of duty or tax. So fraud. 'Opsporingsdienst' and '-inspectie' are used interchangeably and do not mean anything different.
