Law (general)
Dutch term or phrase: administratief aanhouden
I am currently translating an incident report, and am having problems with the above phrase.

The context is as follows:

"Hierop worden de betrokken supporters uit het stadion verwijderd en administratief aangehouden wegens verstoring van de openbare orde en wederspannigheid"

What is the difference between aahouden (arrest) and administratief aanhouden?

All suggestions welcome, KudoZ points will be rewarded within 72 hours.

Many thanks,

Pikey

uitleg

Explanation:
Administratieve aanhouding.

neutral  writeaway: saw all those references however are only used in relation to Eastern European countries so am not so sure they apply to UK justice system

agree  Chris Hopley: I suspect the Asker's text refers to the Belgian justice system, where there are powers of 'administrative arrest', as strange as the term may sound...

agree  Tina Vonhof: Maybe it's only a European thing but this seems like a good translation.

held in police custody after arrest on suspicion of ...... whatever

Explanation:
held and if no charges can be brought, they are released. am not sure there is a ready made term for this in English. could be proven wrong however.

Second, the trigger which allows a police officer to arrest and detain someone for up to 24 hours, simply on the basis that their behaviour is such that immediate inquiries should be made, must be totally rewritten.

49. What was administrative arrest and administrative detention? Who could order it, and under what circumstances? How many prisons were there in Belarus? How were prison conditions monitored, and how often were standards reviewed, including those concerning medical attention?
