Dutch term or phrase: style question: u heeft v. u hebt

I'd like to get some feedback from native speakers of Dutch on the use of "u heeft" v. "u hebt." Is there any subtile difference in politeness or connotation in choosing the either? Does one feel more comfortable? In writing, do you prefer to see one or the other (as opposed to hearing in speech)? Thanks in advance.

I grew up with 'u heeft'. I think it sounds more polite, and I would never use 'u hebt' in written language.

Linda Ferwerda: Voor mij persoonlijk is het 'u heeft', maar ik heb klanten die in hun stijlgids hebben opgenomen dat in hun teksten 'u hebt' gebruikt moet worden. En kom daar maar eens tussen!

vixen: Like Paul, I grew up with 'U heeft', but it is becoming old-fashioned. It has become good practice to use the 2nd ps. sg. for verb forms with 'u', so 'u hebt', 'u kunt', 'u zult', and so on.

Explanation:
Twenty years ago I would have answered "u heeft", but language lives. Here is what says the Taalunie:

"Beide mogelijkheden zijn goed. Wel geven wij de voorkeur aan u hebt. Het voornaamwoord u was oorspronkelijk een derde persoon (de vorm is afgeleid van uwe edelheid). Daarbij hoorde natuurlijk een werkwoordsvorm voor die derde persoon: u heeft, u is en u zal. Tegenwoordig zien we u echter als de beleefdheidsvorm van de tweede persoon je/jij (en jullie). Dat pleit voor een werkwoordsvorm die daarmee in overeenstemming is: u bent, u zult en dus ook u hebt."

And Taaluniversum: "U is van oorsprong een derde persoon enkelvoud (afgeleid van uwe edelheid) en wordt daarom soms gecombineerd met werkwoorden in de derde persoon enkelvoud, zoals bij u heeft, u is, u kan, u wil, u zal.

Tegenwoordig beschouwen we u echter als een beleefdheidsvorm van de tweede persoon enkelvoud jij, en wordt u gevolgd door een werkwoord in de tweede persoon, dus: u hebt, u bent, u kunt, u wilt, u zult."

writeaway: well, since the Taalunie is the Dutch-language equivalent of the 'Académie française', this would be the best 'opinion' to follow imho. I also learned 'U heeft' but 'U hebt' is indeed what one hears/uses more nowadays.

xxxFullCircle: U hebt is the correct but rather formal one. Nevertheless, hebt and heeft are used inconsistently. I always use heeft unless I'm not 'allowed' to.

vixen: I agree that 'u heeft' is becoming a bit old-fashioned, although I must admit that I sometimes (e.g. yesterday) catch myself typing 'u heeft' without thinking, but I try to use 'u hebt' consistently. I fully agree with the last line of Paul's reference.

Veel taalgebruikers voelen een subtiel stijlverschil tussen u zult en u zal, u kunt en u kan of u hebt en u heeft: de ene vorm klinkt voor hen 'beleefder' dan de andere. Dat is echter vooral een kwestie van smaak.
